About Dianne The Mermaid

What motivates me is my lifelong love for the ocean, which began when I was growing up on the NSW Central Coast. Back then, I swam in the beach or Lake Macquarie every day. However, it wasn't until I moved to Cairns in 2018 that I fell in love with the Great Barrier Reef and freediving. Working as a Snorkel Guide for Ocean Safari on weekends allowed me to witness firsthand the joy on guests' faces as they experienced the reef for the first time. I was particularly touched by the children who were curious and eager to learn about the marine life and conservation efforts.

To enhance my freediving skills, I took a freediving course and trained with local experts and record holders. While searching for ways to combine my passion for freediving with my love for mermaids, I discovered the PADI mermaid courses. The course content covered the necessary skills for safe freediving while incorporating the performance art and underwater modelling of mermaiding. I decided to take the Instructor training and enrolled in Bali Mermaid School, where I was trained by Sea Queen of Indonesia - Befalia (@MermaidBefa @SeaDivaTails) and Deva McCabe (@MermaidDeva), both renowned mermaid performers. During my training in Bali, I had the opportunity for my first gig as a mermaid at a wedding, and so it began!

I taught PADI Mermaid courses out of Cairns for 18 months, with students who came from all over the world! Then in early 2024 I moved onboard a sailboat and began travelling the Great Barrier Reef full time.

I am enthusiastic about teaching students of all ages and abilities how to gracefully move in the water while wearing a mono-fin and mermaid tail, and to spread the mermaid magic wherever I might be travelling!
